Haulage, Freight and Delivery Services

A freight lorry travelling on a UK motorway near a distribution centre

Whether you need to send a parcel, move a pallet or arrange an international shipment, choosing the right transport service starts with knowing what you need moved.

This page helps you explore providers, prepare for a quote and ask the right questions before booking.

Which service do you need?

Road haulage

For larger loads transported by lorry, including business goods, machinery and bulk deliveries.

Pallet delivery

For goods secured to a pallet. Ask about size and weight limits, packaging and loading arrangements.

Couriers and parcel delivery

For smaller packages and documents. Compare collection options, tracking and delivery times.

International freight

For goods travelling overseas by road, sea, air or rail. Check whether customs support is included.

Specialist transport

For items needing particular handling, such as fragile goods, oversized equipment or temperature-sensitive products. Confirm that the provider accepts your exact load.

Prepare before requesting a quote

Have these details ready:

  • Collection and delivery addresses, including postcodes.
  • A description of the goods.
  • The number of items, pallets or packages.
  • Accurate dimensions and total weight.
  • The value of the goods.
  • Preferred collection and delivery dates.
  • Any access restrictions or special handling needs.

Photographs can help explain an unusual load, but do not replace accurate measurements.

Check the full price

Ask for a written quote explaining what is included.

Useful questions include:

  • Is VAT included?
  • Are there fuel, toll, waiting-time or redelivery charges?
  • Is loading and unloading included?
  • Will a tail lift or forklift be needed?
  • Is delivery to the kerbside or inside the premises?
  • Is the delivery date guaranteed or estimated?
  • What happens if nobody is available to receive the goods?

For international shipments, confirm who pays customs charges and destination fees.

Loss, damage and cover

Ask what happens if the goods are lost or damaged.

Check the provider’s liability limits, exclusions and claims process. Ask whether separate goods-in-transit insurance is needed to cover the shipment’s full value.

Keep invoices, packing records and photographs of the goods before collection.

Packaging and collection

Ask the provider how your goods must be packed, labelled and secured.

Confirm who supplies pallets, straps or protective materials. Tell the company about narrow roads, steps, restricted parking or limited loading space before booking.

If you cannot help with lifting or unloading, make this clear when requesting the quote.

Imports, exports and customs

For overseas goods, establish who will prepare declarations and whether licences or certificates are needed.

Use official guidance alongside the transport company’s instructions:

Delays or delivery problems

Keep your booking confirmation and tracking reference.

If something goes wrong, contact the provider promptly. Explain the problem, keep photographs where relevant and ask for its complaints or claims procedure.

Before you book

Compare services on suitability, total cost, handling arrangements and cover—not price alone.
